As we celebrate the achievements of African American male writers like Ta- Nehisi Coates and Shaka Senghor, it is important to acknowledge the transformational power of literacy in the lives of young men of color. Coates the winner of the prestigious National Book Award and Senghor’s recently released biographical sketch (Writing My Wrongs) of his life growing up in Detroit highlight writing as a powerful tool in confronting social issues.
