In Celebration of Black History, Feb 2024

At the heart of COSEBOC is a celebration of boys and young men of color. Since 2007 we have raised the issues that concern this young population and we have poured our hearts and souls into addressing the challenges and injustices, while wholeheartedly affirming the inherent gifts of our young. We have deepened our understanding at each Annual Gathering of Leaders, each Conversation with Thought Leaders, and each of our Professional Development courses.

Our work is informed by contemporary culture and issues as well as by history and the leaders of our past, whose work and efforts continue to bring light into our world.

So this month as we celebrate Black History and honor the giants and unsung heroes of our past and present, we give thanks to the 19th century scholar, Carter G. Woodson, whose dedication to celebrating the historic contributions of Black people led to the establishment of Black History Month. You can learn more about Dr. Woodson here on Wikipedia.

COSEBOC Spotlight

Deidre Farmbry

Behind the scenes at COSEBOC is a team of dedicated and passionate individuals, each contributing their genius to the COSEBOC mission. Every month in our eNews we spotlight a member of our team, giving you the opportunity to glimpse more closely into the COSEBOC heart.

As we approach the end of Black History Month and lean toward Women’s History Month, we are excited to feature and celebrate Dr. Deidre R. Farmbry!

Dr. Farmbry is deep in the heart of our work here at COSEBOC. She is an experienced educator, having been an English teacher, high school principal, and interim superintendent in the School District of Philadelphia. She is currently an independent consultant at COSEBOC (and elsewhere) specializing in social and emotional learning, leadership coaching, team development, classroom practice, and school improvement via structured inquiry and collaboration. She has presented at educational forums internationally and nationally and facilitated sessions on multiple occasions at COSEBOC’s annual Gathering of Leaders. More recently, she has taken on the role of Director of the COSEBOC Vanguard School Initiative, as well as facilitating this COSEBOC virtual event with Dr. Shawn Ginwright, and following up on her experience of this interview by writing this blog post.

“Working with Deidre is learning in action! Her depth of knowledge, her range of experience, and her absolute commitment to young people (and especially, young people of color) influence every interaction and conversation. And even more than that, the sense of joy in all she does is infectious. I often think I want to be Deidre Farmbry when I grow up!”

NEXT VOICE

NEXT VOICE is a series of short video clips that share the voices of participants and COSEBOC facilitators speaking about COSEBOC programs. Here Kamau Ptah shares a few words about D.R.U.M. as a Rites of Passage program.

“Every experience that reflects transformation, some type initiation, is designed for us to begin to step into a greater awareness of who we are, have a context and understanding of whose we are, and at the end be able to identify, claim and confidently live with an awareness of our indwelling powers and how that plays out in family, community, and work.”
~ Kamau Ptah, COSEBOC Professional Learning Facilitator
