14th Annual GOL: Young Kings of Color: Learning from the Footprints of the Past, Taking Footsteps to the Future

Hello COSEBOC Friends and Colleagues:

Ron Walker

We are delighted to announce that the 14th Annual Gathering of Leaders will be held in the great city of Seattle, Washington on April 28-30, 2020.

Those who have attended a Gathering convened by the Coalition of Schools Educating Boys of Color (COSEBOC) can attest to its uniqueness. The Gathering is not a typical conference; it is an Experience. The Experience begins with a theme that sparks reflection, enthusiasm, and a call to action. This year’s theme, Boys and Young Men of Color: Learning from the Footprints of the Past: Taking Footsteps to the Future, will honor the lessons passed on to us by the many iconic movement leaders, activists, and advocates who fought for liberation through their acts of service to marginalized communities. Their legacies of service continue to inform us, and they will guide the footsteps taken by our boys and young men of color in the future.

Every COSEBOC Gathering stays true to our core mission, which is the affirmative social, emotional, cultural, and academic development of boys and young men of color. This mission is woven into the fabric of the program design, the selected workshops, guest speakers’ presentations and the overall ambience of the Gathering. For attendees, the Gathering will prove to be the perfect place to network with established contacts or to make new connections who share your professional background and interests. All Gathering participants have the desire to develop their knowledge, sharpen their skills, and deepen the understanding required for the work of educating students, especially boys and young men of color.

Over the past decade COSEBOC has incorporated another unique dimension which runs parallel to the adult Gathering. We call it the Young Men’s Passage (YMP). It is designed to provide a space for the authentic voice of our young men to be heard and to afford them time to address critical questions such as: what does it mean to develop as a 21st Century male of color in America, or how will my footsteps to the future empower my community?

The YMP opens the Gathering with the Walk of Integrity. You will witness a grand processional of drummers and elders leading a seemingly endless line of young men from Seattle and across the nation, walking tall, giving libations and rendering their responses to the Gathering theme. All in all, whether this is your first or 14th Gathering, you will leave the event ready to ignite transformational change in your school, district, or community in service of boys and young men of color. You will also be prepared to take your own Footsteps to the Future.

We’re looking forward to greeting old friends and new at the 14th Annual Gathering of Leaders!
