(This is not a COSEBOC hosted event) United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey is pleased to join Urban Youth and the Knight Foundation in presenting this special event of an advanced screening of "Black in America 6," which addresses the achievement gap between black and white students. Following the screening, award-winning journalist Soledad O’Brien will moderate a panel discussion on what steps we all can take to ensure that young men of color are adequately prepared to succeed in school and receive the support they need to graduate from high school ready for college or career.

Young, Gifted and Literate: Boys and Young Men of Color Prepared for the Future
The 7th annual Gathering of Leaders will showcase schools and the exemplary literacy practices that they employ as they prepare boys and young men of color for their place in society and the 21st century global community.

To achieve in school, a student must be in school. A simple concept, yet the rates of absenteeism for boys of color are unacceptably high. The reasons behind their absences are varied, but these barriers to school attendance are not insurmountable. Schools can provide strategic support and guidance to help boys improve attendance and succeed in school.
In recent years, there has been significant debate about the unintended consequences of harsh discipline policies, and the disproportionate impact on students of color. School achievement is negatively affected by these rigid discipline policies, and it is also the gateway to involvement with the justice system and school dropout.
